16–27 MAY | GEORGE PATON GALLERY, UNIVERSITY OF MELBOURNE

We are thrilled to be taking part in When you think about feminism, what do you think? George Paton Gallery, Feminisms 1975–2022. The show will map 50 years of feminist exhibitions and projects in the gallery.

From 16–27 May we will reinhabit the iconic George Paton Gallery to honour the historic occasion of the final exhibition at its Union House location (the gallery will be moving to the new University of Melbourne Student Precinct on Swanston Street).

Set up in 1975 at this very site, the Women’s Art Register is now the longest-running, artist-run archive of women’s art practice in the world and is designated a Collection of National Significance. From our humble origins of 180 slides screened at the gallery in September 1975, the archive now includes 12,500 slides, 4,000 artist files, countless digital images and an extensive library.

Come find our mini archive within the gallery space, where we will be continuing our mission to archive the documentation of Australian women artists from the past and present, share their images and stories and amplify their voices.

CALL-OUT FOR STORIES

W.A.R. volunteers and members will be on site throughout the exhibition and we'd love to hear your stories! As we look towards our 50th Anniversary in 2025, we want to hear about your experience of being part of the W.A.R. community—whether it be a past or present association.

Come by for a chat, drop off some musings or, if you can’t make it to Melbourne, please email us at hello@womensartregister.org.
