Purchase the Leaving Your Legacy workbook

The Leaving Your Legacy program began life as a forum at Flesh After Fifty in March 2021. It was designed to further our mission to support the professional practice of Australian women artists and amplify their creative voices.

In 2022, with funding from Creative Victoria, we were able to further develop the program to address a growing need of our audience—assistance with navigating the complexities of estate planning. This included a second forum, a special edition of our Bulletin magazine and an artists’ workbook.

First forum

As part of the Flesh after Fifty: Changing images of older women in Art program, we hosted the Preserving Your Future forum with our partners And Also Presents.

Held at Abbotsford Convent on Thursday 18 March, it was a fantastic evening with plenty of opportunity for discussion between the audience and speakers.

The event focussed on legacy planning and unpacking the barriers faced by women artists, and attendees were treated to some informative and wonderful talks by A/Prof Kate MacNeill from the University of Melbourne's School of Culture and Communication, and artists Frances Tapueluelu and Denise Keele-bedford.

Second forum and Bulletin

The Leaving Your Legacy: A Guide for Australian Artists forum was a one day program of presentations and accompanying Advice Hub, designed to help artists navigate the complexities of estate planning. It took place on Saturday 25 June 2022 at Siteworks in Brunswick.

Leading industry specialists presented comprehensive information on tax, law, archiving and conservation and got the conversations flowing throughout the day.

We wish to thank our presenters Evan Lowenstein (Lowensteins), Jennifer Tutty (Studio Legal), Kate Nodrum (Charles Nodrum Gallery), Catherine Asquith (Catherine Asquith Art Advisory), Eleanor Vallier and Robyn Ho (c/o Studios) and Mar Cruz (ACMI) for their knowledgeable contribution to this important conversation

Our Leaving Your Legacy edition of the Bulletin (#70, July 2022) was also launched and available for sale on the day.

Artists’ workbook

The Leaving Your Legacy: A Guide for Australian Artists workbook outlines key information when considering legal and financial frameworks, commercial galleries and the secondary market, documentation and best practice storage and conservation approaches. If you missed out on attending our June 2022 forum, this book is an excellent resource which brings together important takeaways from the forum with further details from experts in the field.

Presenting a range of information with checklists and additional resources to work through over time, we've framed this workbook as a living document, to give you the confidence and support to define and shape what a successful creative legacy might mean for you.

This book was published in October 2022 and is currently available for purchase in both print and digital formats.
