As part of our 50-year anniversary celebrations, the Women’s Art Register has launched a National Roadshow—outWARds—designed to bring the archive beyond its home in Naarm/Melbourne and into creative communities across the country. Led by committee members, outWARds fosters awareness, participation, and connection, while helping artists understand the importance of documentation and conservation in sustaining a creative practice.
We had an incredible time in Ballarat, where the first stop on the roadshow was met with warmth, enthusiasm, and deep engagement. Thanks to Kathy Horvat for coordinating the event and to Ballarat Arts for co-funding the program.
Here was our agenda for the day:
11:00–11:15am – Welcome to Country by Jenna Oldaker
11:15–12:00pm – History of W.A.R. and current projects
12:00–12:30pm – The archive: how to submit your material and explore the collection
12:30–1:00pm – Lunch break and informal conversations
1:00–1:30pm – Insights from committee members on agency, networking and conserving your practice
1:30–2:30pm – Panel discussion, Q&A, and feedback session
During the afternoon, we were joined by local artists in a meaningful conversation about legacy, visibility, and regional voices. A passionate group has now formed in Ballarat to begin working with the Register more closely, exploring ways to document local artists and strengthen regional representation in the archive.
One attendee reflected:
“It was such an amazing gathering! I signed up as a member to W.A.R. already and a few of us who were there Saturday have decided to put together a local fan club/chapter as a way to help connect (and document!) regional artists in our area. The Women’s Art Register is an amazing and important initiative! Tell your friends.”

" I felt like I was at a real crossroad - now I am going home inspired! "
We are energised by the connections made and can’t wait to continue our journey around the country. If you know anyone in your region that may be interested in having us present in your local area, please let us know!
