Star Artist LILLIAN TOWNSEND   Painting /Drawing 2000 : Biography
Lillian’s painting as always displays a confident and discerning use of colour.  Her imagery seems to evolve through an endless quest to free both the source of her consciousness which I believe is a deep spirituality and the well of her unconscious which displays the gamut of human emotion.  This quest or journey results in a pointed state of visual harmony.  Lillian seems to achieve this through the process of evolution and extinction as images are permitted to either remain on her canvas or be eliminated through her process of picture making.  A process for Lillian that means each work may represent many stages under the finished depiction of her final reality.

Lillian has a vast repertoire of images, some found objects, some born out of discovery as her unconscious responds to her interest in marry elements within nature and human experience and expression.  Each of Lillian's paintings affirms a journey of exploration and discovery that is visually rich and engaging.  Dogs for example can become bejeweled icons of love and devotion.  Seaweed can metamorphose into tantalizing creatures of the imagination that appear to walk across her painted surface.  Repetitive little three pointed waves can be read as hieroglyphics of the emotions and other elements within the work impact on the consciousness as if to awaken a strange primeval familiarity.

In her drawings, Lillian uses a very sensitive technique of mark making which now in some cases incorporates the stitch, to detail again what appears to be a very personal journey through the psyche; sometimes playful, sometimes challenging, but always resulting in a rich and powerful composition.  The works even with their apparent personal exploration remain both accessible and capable of engaging the viewer on many different levels.
