| Artist’s
statement
I currently work mainly as a printmaker, in the medium of linocut prints. My primary interest in recent years has been the general area of those things that may or have contributed towards the shaping of a female identity, both in terms of how women see themselves individually, and the debated issue of a more general `female identity'. Thus I have drawn imagery from Classical mythology - figures such as Electra, Medea, Hecuba and Penelope - and more recently have used old photographs of ballet dancers to create strong graphic images of these typically feminine subjects. For the past two years or so I have been engaged in writing a PhD thesis on the work of Sydney/Canberra artist Vivienne Binns. This has involved extensive research in the general area of Australian women's art, feminist art and the women's art movement of the 1970s particularly. All this has influenced my own practice and so a major body of recent work has been based upon various knitting and crochet designs. More recently I have begun a series that take iconic art historical nudes, pared down and repeated as a wallpaper pattern. This latter work makes reference both to feminist art theory on the body and Vivienne Binns’ "Unknown Artist' works. Penny Peckham CURRICULUM VITAE: PENNY PECKHAM
