Dorothy Baker died on March 13th, 2001 at her home-studio in Kew, aged 86 years. Born in 1914 at Shepparton, she lived there until her early twenties when she came to Melbourne and was accepted into the National Gallery School as a pupil of George Bell. Baker was an adventurous artist who worked in many mediums, had many solo exhibitions and received awards from universities and institutions from all over the world. She was also the first female President of the Victorian Artists Society. A highlight of her career was being guest of honour at the art festival of Zuhnan Province in China where over a million people attended the opening. After finishing her studies at the National Gallery she became a member of the Contemporary Art Society of Victoria where she remained an active member until the Society divided into members choosing their own direction because of mainly political differences. Dorothy will be sadly missed from the art world in Victoria. by Jan Delaney |
