" Expansion" 1960, Margo Lewers,Canberra Rex Hotel Cnr Ipima St and Northbourne Ave (Map 41 H 12) [Can some kind person send a digital photo of this art? for here]

Located at the Rex Hotel is a broken tile mosaic titled Expansion by significant Australian modernist artist Margo Lewers. The mosaic is comprised of glass, vitreous and porcelain tiles cut and shaped by hand. The artist selected the mosaic colours to contrast with the colours of the hotel at that time – yellow, grey and black.  The title ‘Expansion’ may have been ironic – when the artist came to install the work, now 2.3 metres high x 12.3 metres long, it was 45cm too long for the wall. Listed on the Interim ACT Heritage Objects Register by the ACT Heritage Council.
